To keep up to date with everything going on (including a new Killeroo crossover story, conceived ENTIRELY on Twitter!), make sure you’re tuned into the following Twitter feeds:

It would have been nice to have the backing of Australia’s premiere graphic novel specialists, but it’s not the end of the world. In fact it’s really just a tiny pothole on a dirt road for the rolling road train that is Killeroo!

We’ve been meeting with some agents in Melbourne who see the potential in the book, and we’re also going to try our luck with Image Comics, who would be the ultimate publisher for Killeroo.

In the meantime though, it’s full steam ahead with the book itself – Paul Abstruse has finished his backup story which I’m in the middle of inking, and after a short break to finish off Azerath, Ryan Wilton will be back on board pumping out more pages of his 100+ page story. Here’s one of his completed pages, sans-lettering:

Ryan’s drawing and inking. The pair of us get confused then unconfused about bits and pieces.

Ryan’s freeing up my script, breaking the layouts I did and making it look better. New comic writers: I overdid the layout and angle descriptions because I didn’t know who the artist would be from the start. If you can find out, have a good chat with your artist and see how much info they want or like.

When I give such obvious advice, I always want to write a disclaimer to experienced people who might mutter, “adoy.” From now on, I won’t. This is for me two years ago, and young writers like me two years ago, today.

If there’s an australian artist I could equate to the energy of the early Todd Mcfarlane Amazing Spider-Man comics, it would be Paul Abstruse.

Anyone who’s met Paul knows he’s the rockstar of Australian comics. The look, the fashion, the quirks and the enthusiasm. There’s no-one like him, and few could soon forget meeting the guy. The best image I can convey to what he’s like at conventions? I will always remember seeing him drawing a picture on some gal’s ample breast. That’s Paul Abstruse right there.

And he knows his craft. I couldn’t be happier having him onboard for the GANGWAR story, every page he sends through is better than the last, and he’s not above some occasional constructive criticism on occasion, although usually I don’t even have to ask, he’s already redrawn something he didn’t like.

And this weekend I’m going to start inking his pages, really looking forward to it (although my hand will be sore for weeks after with all the detail required to render).

Especially this page:

Well, these last few weeks have been fairly work heavy and I’ve only been able to snatch a few pages every couple of days, but it’s done. Draft one is complete. Spoke to Darren at the MooPo Gloria Jeans, he gave me good notes. Darren Close gives good note. Great thing is, looks like the redraft won’t be too massive. Just gotta bring Lee in-line a little more – she’s half cute, half wild. Needs to be in between. And need to roughen Rufe’ dialogue. But shit, I’m happy. 99 pages, bitches. Graphic novel.

Chapter 3 didn’t know I was coming. It didn’t have the foggiest idea death was coming. As it sat watching late night TV, half asleep with cheezels in its belly, I slid in through its open window. The night had been hot. Sweat beaded on my brow. The program on the tube flicked over to ads, the volume rising in that annoying way. I used the increase in sound to cover the rustle of the plastic bag. Quickly, no time for pause, I whipped it over Chapter 3′s head.

The Chapter fought. They always do. Once I had a firm grip on the bag, tight around the neck, I delivered a couple of sharp punches to the head. Numbed, struck, the struggle died, then the Chapter.

I rolled Chapter 3 in a rug and dragged it outside to the van. No one paid any attention. They seldom do in this neighbourhood. If Chapter 3 had a little more money, it might not have been finished off tonight. I drove to a secluded fold in the river and turfed Chapter 3 into the water. A cooling relief for this sweltering night. Shame it couldn’t be felt.

Ingrate.

Predictably, I have much to learn. Today I was lightly reprimanded for giving too much detail on posture and stance during a discussion on a character’s design. These are the things I learn in the face of naivety. I was told such details should be left for those moments in the script. Indeed they are in there, and my reasoning for blurting out the detail overbearingly at poor Ryan was to help him with a character I thought he might be struggling to grip. But now I know: keep your trap shut about too fine a detail when an artist is character-sheeting. Balancing how much input you give out from your own role: it’s a difficult game when you’re a new player, and I’m sure as hell new.

Don’t give up on me guys!
